Formula for Growth

Turkey Club America has launched a new program “Formula for growth”.

baby formula 2The first 6 – 12 months of a child’s life are the most important time when the child’s brain is being formed. If a child doesn’t get enough to eat, or doesn’t get sufficient real nourishment during these months there is a strong likelihood that they will suffer both psychological and physical developmental disorders in the future.

Two new studies from Cincinnati Children’s Hospital show that "formula stretching," watering down infant formula or skipping feedings, can have significant health consequences on an infant's developing brain, increasing the risk for learning, behavioral and psychological problems.

In one study, the researchers studied families treated at two pediatric clinics in Cincinnati that see about 45,000 patients from underserved neighborhoods each year. Despite receiving public assistance, about 30 percent of these families could not afford to meet their basic nutritional needs."We were surprised to find one in three families worried about putting food on the table," said study co-author Dr. Andrew Beck, a general pediatrician, in a hospital news release. The inability to pay for enough food to satisfy basic nutritional needs is called food insecurity. "Food insecurity tends to be an invisible problem, forcing families to make difficult choices between nutrition and other essential needs," Beck said.

Through “Formula for Growth” Turkey Club America is trying to ensure that every food bankmother and baby and pantry that we support has enough baby formula to meet the needs of all the families that they care for. We want our children to have the chance to grow up to be healthy and well developed and we recognize that this starts with adequate nutrition in the first years of life.

To do this, we need your help. If you are new to Turkey Club America, please join us and give the cost of just one or two meals a month to help feed hungry children, families, seniors and veterans here in America. A portion of every subscription will go to the “Formula for Growth” program.

President's Message

A personal message from More Than Life and Turkey Club America President Denise Cantrelle.

imgPeopleI know what it is like to be without enough food.

Many years ago as a young mother I found myself cold, hungry and alone. In the wintertime in the small Northern California town of Susanville, living in a tiny rental that had neither proper heat nor insulation, I had to make the tough decision between providing warmth or food for my baby daughter and myself.

It is no fun living on oatmeal and Ramen Noodles and it is no fun being cold.

The good news is that there were those who reached out and helped me. When I was at my most desperate there were those who gave some simple basics from the little that they had and helped see me through the worst times of need.

Through their generosity I was able to survive, to go back to school and make a life for myself and my family.

As life got better for me, I vowed that I would never forget those tough times, never forget that when I was at my most needy there were those that reached out and helped me and I vowed that I would give back whenever I could to help those that find themselves in the position I was in all those many years ago.

Now I am married, my daughter is a grown woman making her own way and life is good. Now I am able to repay some of the kindness that was shown to me.

I know that there are many who are not able to give their time to volunteer and the logistics of providing meals and food to individual families makes it impossible for most of us to help in the way that perhaps we would like, but all of us can sacrifice just a little to help those that are in need.

At our church, More Than Life in Northern California, I started Turkey Club America to encourage others all across this great country to join with me in helping to feed those that are hungry and in need, Young mothers with children who go to bed hungry each night just as I did, seniors who in their sunset years cannot afford to put food on the table, veterans who, having served their country find themselves now needing a helping hand, the unemployed who have run out of funds, all the growing numbers of needy and hungry people in America.

Our Mission

Fighting hunger in America – It's all we do.

It all started when there were a couple of families in our Church that we realized could not afford to put a Turkey on the table at Thanksgiving. A generous member wanted to help but did not want to embarrass the families by doing so directly.

Mission photo 1From such a small beginning Turkey Club was born. The idea took hold and spread nationwide – not just to provide Turkeys at Thanksgiving and at Christmas but to fight hunger wherever we find it throughout the year.

Turkey Club America is fast becoming a leading provider of food and resources to feed needy, homeless and hungry children, families and individuals across our nation.

We have one goal. To provide money to feed those who are genuinely hungry.

We are not engaged in politics or multiple social programs, nor are we a lobbying group. We simply use the money that our members generously give each month to support food banks, buy food, provide meals, feed hungry children, families and veterans across America and encourage others to give whatever they can afford to join us.

Mission photo 2Some people are able to volunteer their time or to give produce at food drives and we applaud them and thank them for their generosity. We work with them every day in all the many food banks and missions that we serve.

We can't all give our time or participate in volunteer activities so Turkey Club America has grown to support those who don't have the ability to give time or goods but still want to help those that are in need by donating their money instead.

We guarantee that the money that you give will be used to help feed the hungry in America.

With more and more people joining the ranks of the hungry each day and faced with the increasing need for food assistance across the country from California to Maine the members of Turkey Club America in nearly every state are providing active assistance and positive help to those in need through their regular donations.

We need for you to join us by donating the cost of a meal or two each month to help feed the hungry.
